Basset Hound

This wonderful breed in all respects can not leave anyone indifferent. Basset Hounds are true aristocrats of the canine world, possessing remarkable qualities. We will talk about these obedient, friendly and slightly melancholy dogs in this article.

Breed history

The history of the breed. The name of the breed itself comes from two words: "buss" - bottom, and "hound" - hound dog, that is, in other words, "low hound". The theory of the origin of this breed is also very interesting. Two countries participated in the formation: France and England. Most dog handlers are inclined to think that the Norman French hounds served as the basis for creating a new branch.with a "good character and good looks."

Until the middle of the last century, basset hounds did not stand out as a separate breed, they were simply taken from the total number of “non-standard” hounds with short stature, bent paws and ears dragging along the ground, which specialized in burrowing foxes and hares. This situation could never have been resolved until Count Lekute and Mr. Lahn paid attention to these dogs. They created two types of breed: the Lekut basset, small squat dogs with slightly curved legs, and the Lana basset, massive and large animals with large heads and ears.

Both of these varieties were officially brought to England in 1866, when a magnificent pair of basset hounds were brought to Lord Gelway as a gift, later they gave excellent offspring and became the founders of the English branch of the breed. But the British were not limited to what they received and then began experiments on mixing bassets with bloodhounds, in a desire to strengthen the main features of the animal: folds on the skin, the shape of the head and large dragging ears.

It is interesting! Currently, many dog handlers agree that in the blood of the current basset hounds there is very little from the original French breed, and much more signs from the bloodhound.

Description and appearance

The breed standard describes the Basset Hound as follows: it is a hound with good working qualities, reliable, seeks out the beast with the help of a scent, works well in a pack, and team qualities are well developed. She has a nice booming melodic bark. Not aggressive, fearless, calm, balanced, loyal to the owner of the dog. Self-esteem and unhurriedness - these are the distinctive qualities of this breed.

Appearance. This is a massive hound of large build, the body is well balanced. The frontal line and the line of the protruding part are almost parallel. A small number of folds are allowed on the face and around the eyes, but there should not be too many of them. The skull is large, slightly convex, with a pronounced occiput and a smooth transition from the forehead to the muzzle.

The nose is mostly black; a light nose is allowed in representatives of a light breed. The whole muzzle is elongated, massive. The upper lip is saggy, largely covers the lower. Particular attention to teeth and jaws, they must be well developed, bite: correct, in the form of "scissors".

The eyes are in the form of a “rhombus", they should not be convex or deep set. In dark-colored representatives of the breed they are only dark brown in color, in basset hounds with lighter hair a light brown color is allowed. Any shades of blue, gray and yellow in the color of the iris are not allowed.

Ears are large, low in structure, not thick in structure, easily twisted, pleasant and silky to the touch. The neck is quite powerful, strong with pronounced muscles and saggy skin, it should not be short. The spine line is deep, the height of the trunk is approximately uniform along the entire length. The chest may protrude slightly, but it should not be narrow. The costal bones should not stick out, but they can spring slightly by touch.

The tail is long, firmly set, thinner at the end, at the bottom with a small amount of wool. It is not allowed to twist into a sickle or ring, it must be in the form of a "saber". When running - with a little stiffness, a little curved and turned to the side.

The front of the body is well-built, the front legs are powerful, with thick bones, wrinkling is allowed on the legs. The back is rounded, muscular, on the hock joint, the skin can gather in a small fold. Pillows are large, developed, convex. The front legs look straight or slightly apart, the total weight of the animal is evenly distributed without pressure on the front or rear. The footprint on the ground should correspond to a typical hound, and only pillows should touch the surface, touching other parts is unacceptable.

It is interesting! Basset Hound, despite the "awkward" figure moves smoothly and elegantly. It should throw out its paws correctly, widely, hind and front legs equally uniformly move. There should be no dragging of claws.

The coat is glossy, of good density and structure, of medium thickness. Areas with combed hair and long hair, even small ones, are not allowed. The color is typical for hounds: three-color, white with black or brown, white with brown. The height at the withers of males is 35-38 cm, females 32-36 cm.

Breed character

From the side of the basset hound it seems a little lazy and clumsy, but this is a very deceptive feeling. This is a dog with great intelligence, which loves respect and will not tolerate familiarities. Possessing a fairly calm disposition, they are not averse to frolic and run enough, so they require good physical exertion. Behind the appearance of a half-asleep phlegmatic is sometimes a true leader who is able to manipulate the owner. Therefore, great attention must be paid to training and knowledge of elementary teams.

It is interesting! Such a dog needs a special approach, and for mutual understanding you will need to make a lot of effort and patience. Screaming and ordering this dog is useless; it will simply ignore you. Basset Hounds love communication "on equal terms" and if you achieve their respect, you will get a faithful and devoted friend.

With all bad habits you need to start fighting since you bought a puppy. For example, if you do not teach him to ignore dubious street “snacks” from early childhood, then retraining an adult basset hound in the future will be very problematic.

These dogs do not tolerate loneliness and from boredom can "eat" a chair or favorite shoes. To avoid such a catastrophe, you need to buy more toys, it can be various tweeters, bones or balls. But before buying, be sure to consult the seller so that the ball is not too small, otherwise the dog can easily swallow it.

Relations with young children can be very good, as the dog has a balanced character and is not aggressive. But be sure to ensure that the kids do not bother, do not pull the dog's paws and tail. Since bassets are direct descendants of the hounds, their content with other animals is rather problematic. Especially you need to avoid the neighborhood with the usual historical "prey": rabbits, foxes, ferrets and small rodents, otherwise it can provoke a hunting instinct and the dog will become aggressive and uncontrollable.

Basset hounds need long walks in the fresh air, they need moderate physical activity. If you are letting go of a dog, always make sure that it does not go too far. This breed has a subtle scent and can "take a trace" of a cat or mouse in the park. Fascinated by such a "hunt" the dog can easily get lost.

Care and maintenance

Basset Hound - a dog exclusively for keeping in a house or apartment. Keeping it in an aviary, or even worse, on a chain is completely unacceptable. Recently, this excellent hunting dog has become a companion dog for leisurely long walks. Basset hounds are very fond of playing and jumping outdoors, but because of their short paws their belly is often contaminated. Therefore, pre-teach your dog to hygiene procedures after a walk, for this, purchase a special terry mittens and shampoo for smooth-haired dogs. For cold and rainy weather you can buy a beautiful jumpsuit.

Minimal hair care, it’s enough to comb out the dog with a special brush once or twice a week. Also monitor the condition of the claws and cut them regularly.

Like all dogs with long basset hounds, they need thorough and regular cleaning of their ears. Also, very often they can suffer from diseases such as otitis media, ear mites and various inflammations. You need to purchase a special cleaning solution or just wipe your ears with cotton pads or sticks soaked in warm water. If suddenly the dog began to rub its head, shake it for no apparent reason - make an appointment with the veterinarian.

The eyes of the basset hounds are also often susceptible to disease, it can be a twist of the eyelid or age-related glaucoma. After each walk, carefully examine the eye folds and if you notice excessive tearing, pus or redness, consult your veterinarian immediately.

Food

Another dangerous disease is overweight, which for this breed can create a heavy load on short legs and spine. To avoid this, feed the dog strictly as directed by the breeders, and when switching to dry food, be sure to follow the directions on the package: the daily rate should correspond to the weight and age of the animal. If the dog has become too well-fed, switch to dietary foods and increase physical activity.

Important! The diet should not be pork, fatty lamb or duck. To avoid stomach bleeding, dogs should not be given hollow tubular bones of birds.

Where can I get a puppy and its approximate cost

The price of a thoroughbred puppy ranges from 20 to 40 thousand rubles, depending on the "parenthood". It is strongly not recommended to buy an animal "from the hands" from strangers. In this case, you can get a weakened animal with a bad heredity. You need to get a puppy in specialized official clubs of the breed, before buying you need to carefully study the pedigree of his parents. Pay attention to the appearance of the animal, as well as vaccinations in the veterinary passport. If you do not take the dog not for shows or breeding, but simply for the soul, you should not overpay for “titles and regalia” in the pedigree, it’s enough to buy a pretty and healthy puppy.
